Luxury and pickups did not belong in the same sentence for many years, but that all changed when Ford introduced the first King Ranch edition. Now comes Ram Laramie Longhorn, the top of the line when it comes to Ram pickups.
I have the 1500 series half-ton 4X4 and it has the 5.7-liter Hemi and the new 8-speed automatic transmission. This engine/tranny combo is putting out 395-horses and it is a hoss. When you step on it hard, you are at 60 in a flash. The truck is rated at a towing capacity of just over 10,000 pounds, so it is quite capable and a contender when it comes to light duty pickups.
One spot where this truck really stands out is the ride quality, it is super smooth due to the Ram air suspension system. The system is expensive at $1595, but it ensures the truck is always level even when towing, and at highway speeds, it lowers itself 1” for increased fuel economy. The Ram sorts of glides over potholes and other rough roads. If I were buying a Ram, this suspension would be a must-have option. Electric power steering adds to the enjoyment of the driving experience and is very responsive.
My review vehicle is super loaded, the Laramie Longhorn comes with an impressive list of standard features like remote start, backup camera and parking sensors, trailer towing package, navigation system, heated and cooled front seats, leather interior, voice command, an Alpine sound system, spray-in bedliner, and Chrysler’s UConnect system, which gives you voice texting and a host of apps like Pandora.
Options on this truck total just over $7100 and include automatic high beam controls, rain sensitive wipers, a rear locking differential, power moonroof, chrome step bars, the air suspension system, trailer hitch and brake controller, and the Ram Box. Ram Box is built into the side of the pickup box and is lockable and water proof. It gives you a tremendous amount of storage and would be a real asset to hunters and outdoor types.
For 2013, the Ram sports a new grill and a lower swooping hood for better aerodynamics. Also new is the active grill shutters. A key component of Ram evolved aerodynamics technology, active air grille shutters open to cool the engine and close at highway speeds to reduce drag and improve efficiency. One other key feature for 2013 is an all-new frame under the truck, and you can tell the difference in the way this truck drives and handles.
The interior of this truck is amazing and beautiful. Leather abounds and it has a lot of stitching on the seats and dash and it is stunning. A round knob replaces the traditional shifter, and this truck has the biggest console I have ever seen in a vehicle. All the wood in the Laramie Longhorn is real, the seats are comfortable, and I’m not sure why, but the steering wheel feels great. The dash layout is simple and what gauges it has can be configured to suit the driver. It has awesome all-weather floormats, not something I usually pay close attention to.
This is a high-tech truck. Besides the first 8-speed automatic in a pickup, this truck also has the Chrysler cylinder deactivation system, which shuts off 4 of the 8 cylinders at cruising speeds. The end result is of course better fuel economy, but as important is the truck turns very low RPM at 65 miles per hour, which will be good down the road for engine wear and tear.
$55,000 is a lot of money for a truck, but this is a lot of truck. The interior is awesome, it rides and drives great, and it’s a joy to drive.
