Test Drive: 2014 Acura MDX AWD Tech Review

Test Drive: 2014 Acura MDX AWD Tech Review

2014 brings a redesigned Acura MDX, and although the exterior still looks basically the same, the interior is much improved, and you have a lot of things available to you that you did not in the past.

For instance, my tester has the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, but for 2014, you can now get it in a two-wheel version if you want to save some money and increase fuel economy a little. Also new for 2014 is a new and easy way to access the third row seat, with just the push of a button. This is a midsized SUV. Keep that in mind…the third row would be great for a couple of kids, but not for adults.

Under the hood, we have the 3.5-liter V6, and a six-speed automatic transmission, putting out 290-horses. Acceleration is strong, which was a surprise, I love the way this vehicle is geared and how well the transmission shifts. The 2014 Acura MDX AWD Tech is rated to tow 3500 pounds, which is pretty standard on V6 SUVs.

2014 Acura MDX AWDThis press fleet vehicle is the Tech model, which is one step up from the base, and there are two more loaded versions above the Tech. This vehicle does not have a single added option, and for me, I think this is the best package that offers the most for the money. This MDX has a ton of equipment for under $50,000.
At no charge, you get navigation system, rearview camera, leather heated seats, power moon roof, power tailgate, Bluetooth, and a great sound system.
My one complaint about the vehicle is the controls, which are above the center stack with a two-screen system. On top, you get the navigation system, below the radio, climate control, etc. I find it cumbersome to find the controls you are looking for. The layout was supposed to make it easier, but for me, it is more difficult and often distracting.
All in all, it is a great SUV and much improved from the last version. Honda really priced this vehicle right, to come in under the price of most of it’s competition.

What I liked most: Performance and interior quietness.

What I would change: The controls that operate everything.

MSRP: Base price $49,460, as equipped $49,460.

Fuel Economy: Stated at 18 in town/27 highway/21 combined, got 30 on the highway pretty consistently.

Weight: 4025 Pounds.

Fuel Tank Capacity: 19.5 gallons

2014 Acura MDX in a few words: Much improved and a great value!

Warranty: 4 year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper, 6 year/70,000 mile powertrain warranty, and roadside assistance.
