My tester is loaded and has the 5.3-liter V8 that is rated at 355-horses. It has a 6-speed automatic transmission, and this combo moves this 5300-pound pickup very nicely. As with many of the GM products today, including the 2014 Corvette I just had, the Sierra has active fuel management, which cuts out 4 of the cylinders at highway speeds.
Inside the truck, the interior is vastly improved from the 2013. It is also super quiet, an area that needed improvement. The interior, like Silverado, is the best GM interior I have experienced in a GM truck. The stitching on the dash and steering wheel looks great, the dash layout is simple with big buttons and it is easy to operate. A dual glove box is a nice touch; half of it can be locked, which is awesome for carrying firearms and other valuables. The back seat is redesigned and super roomy.
My tester has MyLink audio that features an 8” color monitor to operate the navigation system, and Bose stereo, which features Pandora, real-time traffic, weather, and sports, and numerous other apps. This Sierra has the Driver Alert package, which gives you rear park assist, forward collision alert, and lane departure which vibrates your seats. It’s a bargain at $845 retail. If you veer out of your lane to the left, the left side of the seat vibrates. The same happens if you veer to the right without signaling. I first experienced this in the Cadillac XTS.
Other options include the Value Package, which upgrades the sound system, gives you chrome running boards, and 20” chrome wheels that look awesome. That package is $2195. Heated and cool seats will set you back $650, the Z71 package is $430, and the Preferred Package gives you heated steering wheel and power sliding rear window for $400. This one has a power sunroof for $995, and navigation system for $795.
If you do not want some of these options, the Sierra SLT comes standard with Onstar, EZ lift and lower tailgate, power seats, dual-zone air conditioning, adjustable pedals, rear backup camera, Bluetooth, and an 8” color touchscreen monitor, plus a lot more.
The Sierra handles great, rides better than most half-ton trucks, and the fuel economy is outstanding for a 4-wheel drive truck. It is doing the 22-MPG highway, but there is a caveat to that: this truck has a 3:08 rear axle ratio, which limits your towing to around 7000 pounds.
A couple of things of note that I really liked were the addition of electric power steering, which makes it drive great and is super easy to turn, and also the huge center console with your USB ports, two power points, and a 12-volt outlet. The truck wars are heating up with the addition of the GMC Sierra.
What I liked most: Interior, quietness, and fuel economy.
What I would change: Transmission shifts a little funny, but I am getting used to it.
