2015 VW TDI Golf Sets Guinness World Record

2015 VW TDI Golf Sets Guinness World Record

Volkswagen is reaching new heights with its TDI Clean Diesel engines. The Golf TDI now holds the Guinness World Record for “lowest fuel consumption – 48 U.S. contiguous States for a non-hybrid car.” It accomplished this feat with an amazing average mpg of 81.17.

The record was set by two guys in a 2015 VW TDI Golf who used a little over 100 gallons of diesel fuel to travel 8,233.5 miles through the all 48 contiguous states. The trip took 16 days and just wrapped on Tuesday.

“Covering 8,233.5 miles on just 101.43 gallons of Clean Diesel fuel is a remarkable accomplishment, and solid proof of the efficiency and fuel economy of Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel vehicles. Whether on a long road trip, or even in daily commuting, the great mileage and long range of our TDI models is a pure convenience factor that few other vehicles on sale can match. It’s a simple formula: Less Stop, More Go!” says Michael Horn, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

The two guys who made the record setting trek are Wayne Gerdes, the primary driver and “expert hypermiler” who has set mileage records in over 100 vehicles. His Golf TDI 81.17 mgp record beat out not only the last record of 77.99 mpg, which he also drove in the 2013 VW TDI Passat, but also beat the 74.34 mpg hybrid record. His co-pilot was Bob Winger, an electronic engineer.

“Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel engines are just amazing. I don’t think people realize the potential mileage you can get from them. In our experience, it is possible to get truly impressive mileage results by using just a few simple fuel-savings techniques,” says Gerdes.

The Golf is VW’s much alluded four-door hatchback that comes in a plethora of different model versions. The TDI is offered in three trim levels and starts at $22,345 with the S. The SE and SEL trims start at $25,895 and $28,395 respectively. Under the hood all trims pack the 2.0-liter TDI engine that gets 150 horsepower and, for the average driver, an estimated 30 mpg city and 45 mpg highway.

The compact Golf is also ready for any cross-country road trip with 52.7 cubic feet of cargo room with the seats folded down, Bluetooth connectivity, and a media system with iPod integration. A panoramic sunroof, rearview camera, and Fender Premium Audio System also comes standard on all TDI SE and SEL models. The SEL also comes with a navigation system and keyless entry push-button start.
