Forte models built after March 2017 earn the improved rating with its optional, superior-rated front crash prevention system and available “good” rated headlights.
To get top honors, Kia beefed-up the structure at the door hinge pillar and the door sill on models built after March 2017. Researchers also note the longer side-curtain airbag. The improvements help it ace the small overlap test. It’s the test that creates a front collision that hits the left-side headlight but is not a full on frontal collision (there’s another test for that).
Headlights also come into play. The EX trim equipped with the Premium Plus package scores a “good” rating in terms of headlight safety. However, trims without the Premium Plus Package score “poor” on headlights. The “good”-rated headlights were available on models built after July 2016.
Really, all you need to know is this; if you’re looking for a good affordable small car the Forte now makes the safety cut if you go with the optional, superior-rated crash system and available “good” rated headlights on the Premium Plus Package.
