A family hauler that packs more than 600 horses. Yep. Mercedes-Benz is shoving an AMG-tuned 4.0-liter V8 into the E63 S wagon. Because why not.
So if you’re thinking wagon like a VW Golf Sportwagen or the Subaru Outback, think again. We love both of those models and they’re perfect for an adventuresome soul. But this wagon is in its own element. Think more three point star.
It cruises up to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Top speed, if you dare, is 180 mph. The idea of going that fast in a wagon seems absurd. It more pays tribute to the power of the engine under the hood.
The V8 makes 603-horsepower with 627 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain uses special AMG Speedshift Multi Clutch 9-speed sports transmission with a wet clutch. Of course, it comes with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. When it comes to drifting, the power shifts to the back wheels.
The V8 is the same one we saw in the AMG E63 Sedan in Los Angeles last year. The powertrain and tuning are also the same AMG design. Basically, it’s the long roofline evolution of the sedan. It adds a few exterior changes with 1.1-inch wider wheel arches and more aggressive bumpers.
Handling uses three-mode adjustable air suspension. You select between the five modes including Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Race. The last mode is Individual and is self-explanatory. Inside are all the luxe features you expect in a Mercedes; 12.3-inch touch screen, sport seats, AMG steering wheel, black carbon fiber gauges, the works.
Exact pricing hasn’t been released yet. It will likely fall in upwards of $100 grand. Look for it in dealerships this fall as a 2018 model.
