603-Horsepower Mercedes-AMG E63 S is a Drift Mode Missile

603-Horsepower Mercedes-AMG E63 S is a Drift Mode Missile

Once again, Mercedes-Benz is wowing us with a performance car we’d happily take for a spin about the block and then some.

It’s the new 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 sedan which will make its public debut at the LA Auto Show next month. There are two models. A base and a top-of-the-line E63 S. The latter is a 603-horse powerhouse that comes standard with a drift mode.

Outside, it’s everything you expect an AMG performance car to be with lower air intakes, a wider body and more trim pieces. The E63 also has an inset hood. Meaning the front doesn’t come in contact with the headlights. Inside the cabin features more carbon fiber.

A 4.0L V8 biturbo engine generates up to 603-horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque in the E63 S. This makes it the most powerful in the E-Class lineup ever. It’s zero to 60 time is 3.3 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 186 mph. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT nine-speed sport transmission is combined with a wet start-off clutch for the first time, enabling more agile response times to be achieved.

Now to the part some die-hard fans were worried about. Mercedes has a new AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. It basically ditches a rear-wheel drive in favor of distribution between the front and rear axles. However, not to worry. Rear-wheel drive is actually still available in Drift Mode.

The 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 arrives at dealers next summer.
