BMW Debuts M4 Concept in Monterey

BMW Debuts M4 Concept in Monterey

It’s Monterey Car Week and it wouldn’t be complete without BMW making a contribution. This year, BMW’s motorsport division BMW M GmbH unveiled the Concept M4 GTS. It is a special edition based off the M4 Coupe and is a high-performance model, designed equally for the road and track. It will also be the first BMW special production M3/M4 model to go on sale in the U.S.

“While the BMW M4 Coupe embodies the ideal combination of motor sport genes and unrestricted everyday usability, the BMW Concept M4 GTS previews an emotionally powerful and exclusive special model conceived with an eye for trailblazing technology and a keen focus on the race track. Despite its outstanding track ability, it is still fully road-legal. This is racing technology for the road in the truest sense,” says Frank van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH.

This special production car takes Coupe’s design and puts its own spin on it by adapting the front splitter and rear spoiler to both be manually adjustable as well as made of exposed carbon. This allows drivers to set the car to be perfectly aerodynamic for road or race track. The exterior is further distinguished with a paint combination of Frozen Grey metallic with an Acid Orange accent color on the front splinter and wheels.

An attention to a lightweight performance design is seen in the CFRP, carbon fiber reinforced plastic, hood, that not only lowers the weight, but also the cars center of gravity. A weight reduction is also found in the wheels, which are made of forged and polished light-alloy and in a 666 M style.

The Concept also features new technologies that are going to be arriving in other production models in the BMW lineup by the end of the year. One of which is a water injection system, that has already proven its capability to boost output and torque in the M4 MotoGP Safety Car. The system works by using vaporizing water to cool the engine’s components; allowing it to operate at a higher and more efficient level.

Another new technology that is on display in the Concept is rear lights of OLED, organic light-emitting diodes. This is a new light technology that creates a panel of homogenous illumination composed of individual lights that can be pinpointed for both an exact, and a uniquely flexible, lighting system.

The M4 Coupe is set to launch a year from now, but it is not clear when the Concept M4 GTS will. So stay tuned for the landing of this special production racer.
