BMW Takes Jab at Tesla in New 330e Plug-In Hybrid Ads

BMW is going after Tesla and the automaker isn’t being shy about it, either.

A new series of ads positions the BMW 330e electric plug-in hybrid as the ‘Car You’ve Been Waiting for Without the Wait’ with the hashtag  #waitordrive.  While the spots don’t mention Tesla by name, it’s a clear knock against the Tesla Model 3 which won’t be out for awhile.

Here’s one of them showing a man looking rather despondent while sitting on his porch, until he sees a 330e in his neighbor’s driveway.

Another spot shows a woman walking by two empty charging stations that look an awful lot like Tesla’s EV stations, before jumping in her BMW 330e.

The ads will air during the Olympics.  No comment about them yet from Tesla.  As of this writing, we haven’t seen CEO Elon Musk comment about them on his Twitter feed either.

BMW’s 330e, branded as an “iPerformance” vehicle, is the plug-in hybrid version of the company’s best-selling sedan.  It hit the market earlier this summer starting from $44,695.  BMW says it offers electric driving at speeds up to 75 mph with a range of around 14 miles.

Tesla’s Model 3, with an estimated 215-mile range per charge, goes into production next year.  The first deliveries are expected in late 2017, unless there are delays. It should retail for about $35,000 after federal tax rebates. More than 350,000 people have placed $1000 deposits on the car.
