Report: Buick Will Debut Sporty Coupe Concept

Report: Buick Will Debut Sporty Coupe Concept

Buick may not be very happy with everyone on its ‘top secret’ vehicle team. That’s because someone let the cat out of the bag about a big surprise. Word on the street tonight is that the automaker is bringing a sporty coupe concept to the Detroit Auto Show.

Some even speculate it could be a new modern-day Buick Grand National or GNX , but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

What we do know, according to Bloomberg, is that Buick will reportedly unveil the coupe Sunday just ahead of the North American International Auto Show. It’s expected to be a two-door and about the size of the Chevrolet Camaro.

The reason we’re pretty sure Buick wanted to keep this under wraps is because Bloomberg notes its source asked not to be identified because the model is (or shall we say, was) a secret.

What we know for sure though is that Buick will show off its new Envision SUV Sunday. The mid-size crossover is built in China and will go on sale in the U.S. later this year. It’s been a popular seller for Buick in China.

Both the Envision and potential sporty coupe concept fit right in with Buick’s plans to attract younger buyers. It’s been trying to edge things up to help change the brand’s geriatric image. Now with a new game plan in place, it does seem as if Buick’s plans to target younger buyers may be working to some degree. According to Buick, its average buyer is now 59 years old.  A decade ago, the average Buick buyer was a retiree in the mid-60s range.

To make this happen, Buick has made a bunch of changes and additions to its lineup over the past year or so. This year, it will also add the Cascada convertible which will start around $34,000. There is a new LaCross sedan as well.

New vehicles will be key for Buick as it tries to turn things around in the US. It’s sales fell almost 3-percent in 2015, despite it being the best-ever year for automakers since 2000. One of the brand’s biggest problems is that it only had two SUVs on the market.

All that said, we’re still more excited about the surprise sporty coupe concept that could debut as soon as tomorrow.
