Test Drive: 2016 Audi A6 TDI Quattro Review

If you listen to the Car Pro radio show often, you know I am a big fan of Audis and this 2016 Audi A6 certainly does not disappoint.  This is the 4th generation of the A6, which falls between the A4 and the A8 in the Audi sedan lineup.

For 2016, the A6 got a mid-cycle refresh, which means they kept most of the car the same, but made some fairly minor changes.  The headlights and taillights are different, the front ladder-style grill is wider and is surrounded by chrome, and they improved the Audi MMI system, which stands for Multi-Media Interface.  MMI essentially runs everything from a color screen that slides out from the dash, but more on that later.

My review vehicle is the A6 Quattro, which means it has Audi’s terrific all-wheel drive system, which will certainly help you in inclement weather, but it also enhances the ride and handling of the A6.

You have three engine choices in the A6.  The base engine is a 2.0 4-cylinder with a turbo putting out 252-horses. You can also jump to the largest engine, the 3.0-liter with a turbo putting out 333-horses.

My Moonlight Blue review A6 is the 3-liter V6 diesel, known as the TDI, which stands for Turbocharged Direct Injection, and it is my personal favorite.  Made famous by Volkswagen, this engine is known for performance, fuel economy, and long-term reliability.

The Audi TDI is rated at 240-horses, which sounds low for a large, luxury sedan, however, it has an incredible 428 pound-feet of torque, which makes the car feel like a large V8 upon acceleration.

All A6 Quattro TDIs come with an 8-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted from paddles on the steering wheel, or you can shift it from the gearshift on the center console.

My tester is the top-of-the-line Prestige package that adds a heads-up display, LED lights, air-conditioned seats, a Bose stereo, power rear window shade, and a power opening and closing trunk.  This comes at an additional cost of $4200.  You can also get the A6 in a premium and premium plus, which has fewer standard features.

As we move to the interior, Audi is known for luxurious interiors and this one has very comfortable leather, power seats for both front seat occupants.  New for 2016 is the beautiful real Walnut wood that adorns the door panels, the dash, and all-around the center console.

Notable standard features inside the A6 Prestige package are power sunroof, power tilt wheel, steering wheel controls, rearview camera, navigation system, and as mentioned earlier, the MMI system.

The MMI operating system allows you to instinctively manage an array of systems including navigation, entertainment, interior comfort, even ride dynamics of the A6.

You also get Audi Connect free for six months.  Audi Connect is your onboard source for information about traffic, weather, directions and more, featuring Google Earth, Google Voice search, social media integration and a secure, high-speed Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices.  Everything can be operated by the controllers in the center console or by voice command.

There is a bit of a learning curve to the MMI system, but you’ll get it in short order, and you’ll love the colors and graphics of the center screen.  Finally, you get two USB ports for 2016, something Audi has been lacking in the past.

The back seat is roomy and has a comfortable fold-down armrest, and the rear seat is heated.  The rear seat folds down for additional trunk space if needed.  Headroom for all five passengers is good, and trunk space is good as well.  The A6 even has a spare tire, albeit a temporary one.

One other option group I have not told you about on my tester is the S Line Sport package. It runs $1800 and gets you 19” wheels, more suspension settings, and the front and rear bumpers are slightly different.  I love the rectangular chrome exhaust tips that are new for 2016.

To summarize the 2016 Audi A6 Diesel, first and foremost it is a luxury sedan with a beautiful interior, and a sophisticated exterior that will grab everyone’s attention. Next it is a fuel-sipping economy car that is rated at 38 miles per gallon on the highway, and when trying, it will top 40.  Imagine filling up the 19 gallon fuel tank and seeing your car show a range of over 700 miles until empty.

I realize there are some of you who have a bad taste in your mouth from the lousy diesels of the 1980s.  Today’s diesel engines are much different.  This TDI is powerful and will turn 0-to-60 in 5.5 seconds.  There is no smoke from the engine, and it is so quiet you can’t hear it run.  If you want a large, luxury car that will run 300,000 or more miles with no problems, and you want to enjoy exceptional fuel economy – just forget this is a diesel – except of course when you are filling it up.

Sticker price on this loaded A6 is $67,500 and I think that is a bargain considering how it is equipped.

Just FYI, the Government Crash Safety ratings on the 2016 Audi A6 Quattro is 5 stars in every category, and I give it a Car Pro rating of 5 out of 5 stars too.

What I liked most:  Exterior and Interior appearance, performance and fuel economy.

What I would change:  Can’t think of a thing.
