GM Issues Several Recalls

GM logo1). Vehicles Affected: Nearly 15,000 model-year 2014-15 Chevrolet Impala LT and LTZ sedans equipped with a front console storage compartment.

The Problem: The inertia latch on the compartment door may not engage during a rear collision, and the front console compartment door may open. The automaker is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to the problem, and it has ordered a stop-sale on any unsold models until repairs are made.

The Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the console door storage compartment door inertia latch. The automaker has not yet announced a notification schedule.

2). Vehicles Affected: 202,115 Saturn Vue SUVs from the 2002 to 2004 model years in the U.S., with around 13,000 more outside the country.

The Problem: Two potential issues exist. The first is that if you stop the vehicle and put the automatic transmission in Park, you could have a hard time getting the key out. “The ignition cylinder can bind, and the key can get stuck in there,” GM spokesman Alan Adler said. The second possibility is an opposite problem: The key may be removable when the car is stopped but not in Park. Although this is an ignition-related issue, Adler said that there is no danger of what GM has termed “unintended key rotation” — i.e., the key getting bumped out of the Run position while the car is moving, which is responsible for more than 10 million GM recalls this year. “It’s not an ignition switch” problem, Adler maintained. “That is not the issue here.” That said, GM said in a press release that it’s aware of two crashes and one injury “potentially related” to the Vue’s issue.

The Fix: GM dealers will inspect the key for either problem. If it exists, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and keys for free.

What Owners Should Do: Owners can call Saturn customer assistance at 800-553-6000. Adler says he doesn’t have a timeline yet on how long it will take for replacement parts to show up, but GM recommends that owners ensure their vehicles are in Park before exiting; stick-shift SUVs (yes, Saturn did sell a few) should be put into Reverse and the parking brake should be set.

3). Vehicles Affected: More than 48,000 model-year 2013 Cadillac ATS four-door sedans and Buick Encore crossovers.

The Problem: The front outboard lap belt pretensioner cables will retract upon deployment to pull in seat belt webbing, but may not lock, allowing the cable and the retracted webbing to return to their original length under occupant loading. This could increase occupant movement and, therefore, the risk of an injury, in certain crashes. GM said the problem was discovered during frontal crash testing, and the automaker is unaware of any related crashes or injuries.

The Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front outboard lap belt pretensioners. The automaker has not yet announced a notification schedule, but has ordered a stop-sale for any unsold models at dealerships until repairs have been made.

4). Vehicles Affected: Nearly 2,000 model-year 2009-10 Chevrolet Aveo subcompact sedans and model-year 2009 Pontiac G3 hatchbacks.

The Problem: According to the Detroit News, brake fluids used in affected vehicles may not sufficiently inhibit corrosion in key components of the vehicle’s braking system, reducing braking effectiveness and increasing the risk of a crash. The affected vehicles were imported to the U.S. from Korea and are connected to a recall of nearly 44,000 model-year 2009-12 Hyundai Genesis sedans, the newspaper reported. GM had previously notified owners of the issue and its potential consequences during a voluntary customer-service campaign in 2012, but has now upgraded the action to a recall after discussions with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. GM said 66 percent of the affected vehicles were previously repaired under the customer-service action. No fatalities have been reported as a result of the issue, though Hyundai is aware of six collisions and two injuries involving the Genesis, the Detroit News reported.

The Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will make the necessary repairs for free. The automaker has not yet announced a notification schedule.

    I think everybody knows how I feel about my 2011 CHRISTINE Cruze – at least CHRISTINE Fury fixed herself overnight – which surprisingly looks like it might make 50K miles this month!!!

    my gripe this time has to do with why is the gom’mint spending MILLION$ promoting a race car?!

    this reminds me of my 2 week active duty in the AF Reserves eons ago, when my super sarge came to me in the 2nd week stating we needed to have an ‘Airman of the Year Beerbust’…in dismay I asked “why?!”
    he said the base hadn’t used up the annual budget and this should solve the problem. I asked “why not just give it BACK to the gom’mint?!”
    “Oh Noooo, we cant do THAT! do you realize how many senators/congresspeople would be out here around our necks asking us if we were crazy?! They’ll CUT our budget next year
    just to punish us!!!”
    (Can you say “Gom’mint WASTE back in the 1960’s?!)
