Infiniti is going old school cool for its new ad for the 2015 QX60. The ad titled “Vacation” recreates the famous scene from the 1983 movie National Lampoon’s Vacation. Specifically, it recreates the scene that features blonde bombshell and supermodel Christie Brinkley and a drop-top Ferrari.
Christie Brinkley returns again, but this time riding shotgun to Ethan Embry who played Clark’s son, Rusty, in the 1997 sequel Vegas Vacation. In the original scene Chevy Chase plays Clark Griswold who takes his family on what turns out to be a disastrous family road trip in a station wagon. This time the family loads up in the QX60 and heads out for Walley World, the amusement park that that was closed when the Griswolds arrived.
The QX60 in place of the station wagon is not the only switch up in rides. A lamborghini takes the place of the Ferrari as the red convertible. When Embry spots the blonde behind the wheel Brinkley ironically says, “Honey, a blonde in a convertible? Seriously?”
“There is a little bit of nostalgia just because it’s such an iconic scene, but what we also wanted to do was bring it into the modern day and use a modern family and a modern car,” says Allyson Witherspoon, director of Marketing Communications and Media, Infiniti USA.
The QX60 is certainly up for a family road trip. It features a standard 3.5-liter DOHC V6 engine with 265 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque and an option of either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. It starts at $42,400 and is Infiniti’s contribution to the seven-seater luxury SUV class.
“The QX60 is the ideal choice for families needing versatility but who also don’t want to sacrifice a thrilling and empowering drive. The ‘Vacation’ scene is so iconic, and we wanted to recreate it through the lens of a modern day family in a luxury SUV. We knew we might have struck an interesting cultural moment, but having Christie and Ethan involved really elevated the concept given their history with the movie franchise. It was a pleasure to work with them,” says Witherspoon.
The spot’s release coincides with the release of Warner Bros. Studio’s remake of the classic movie, but Infiniti says that it had the concept for the ad before news broke of the new movie. Like the ad, the remake is also titled Vacation. It will be arriving in theaters on July 29th.
