Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit won World Car of the Year with its C-Class sedan over the Ford Mustang and Volkswagen Passat — one of three awards the German automaker took home.
A panel of 75 international auto journalists reviewed about two dozen cars before selecting the finalists. They also made awards in four other categories. The awards were announced at the New York International Auto Show.
Mercedes-Benz won World Luxury Car of the Year with the S-Coupe, defeating the BMW i8 and Range Rover Autobiography Black LWB; while the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT won World Performance Car of the Year, defeating finalists BMW M4 Coupe/M3 Sedan and Jaguar F-Type R Coupe.
BMW’s i8 electric vehicle defeated the Mercedes-Benz S 500 plug-in hybrid and Volkswagen Golf GTE for World Green Car, and the Citroen C4 Cactus won World Car Design of the Year, defeating the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Volvo XC 90.
