‘Twas the Night before Christmas Edition. Okay, so it just goes by the Night Edition, but either way, we’re pretty sure Santa would trade in his sleigh for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Night Edition. It will creep into the spotlight at next month’s Detroit Auto Show.
Like most things in the German car world, the Night Edition will arrive in Europe first as the S400 and S500. It heads to America in August 2017 as the S550.
As you might imagine, it’s the S-Class coupe with black accents everywhere you look. The front end features a radiator grille in a single louvre in high-gloss black. The black high-gloss continues on the side-mirror housing, exterior inserts, and side sill panels.
The coupe’s Selenite Gray Mango paint color really makes the black touches pop. The 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels go high-sheen black. The side wings let everyone know you’re a ruler of the night with “Night Edition” badges. The doors open to a night of pure luxury. It offers a variety of custom interior color palettes. You pick a first color of black, crystal gray, saddle brown, or Bengal red. Black, naturally, makes up the second color.
Other cabin details include standard Night Edition engraving on the Nappa Leather seats. The rest of the upholstery comes in regular leather, Nappa leather, or AMG Nappa leather. Of course the wood trim is high-gloss black, too.
The entry level S550 Coupe will carry a standard 4.7-liter V8, packing 445-horses with 516 pound-feet torque. The base model zips 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, pretty sweet considering its heavy 4,707 pound curb weight.
We look forward to seeing the dark beauty for ourselves at NAIAS next month.
