NACTOY Awards Will Finally Show SUVs Some Love

NACTOY Awards Will Finally Show SUVs Some Love

Well, we can only say it’s about time.

The North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year awards are finally showing SUVs some real love with their very own category. (A minivan is thrown into the SUV fray, too.)

This year for the first time ever, there will be three NACTOY awards handed out at the Detroit Auto Show: 2017 North American Car, Truck and, now, SUV of the year.

NACTOY announced the list of eligible vehicles for the 2017 awards this week. The Chrysler Pacifica Minivan is one of 12 SUV candidates. Expect competition in the new category to be very tense, too.  The list also includes the Bentley Bentayga, Jaguar F-Pace, shown above, and Mazda CX-9.

“As the SUV market boomed, we considered this several times,” NACTOY President and Free Press auto critic Mark Phelan said. “The reason we didn’t make a change before was there were not enough pickup trucks.”

In all, 43 models will duke it out for top honors as best car, truck and SUV.  (The 2016 honors went to the Volvo XC90 which competed in the truck category. Car honors went to the Honda Civic.)

We’ll find out who wins the 2017 awards in January at the Detroit Auto Show. But voting begins soon. Jurors, who are automotive journalists, will start the first of three rounds of voting in September. Finalists are announced in December.
