Everyone loves surprises. Especially during this time of year. Well Mazda has its own special surprise for us. It began shipping the 2017 MX-5 Miata RF to dealerships two months early. In other words, they’re on sale now. Just in time for the holidays. Thank you Santa.
Mazda decided to take advantage of holiday sales rather than hold off till February. So now you don’t have to give that cheesy handdrawn gift certificate for one new Miata. Instead you can have it in the driveway in the morning.
Last week the first lucky driver got the keys to a 2017 model. Mazda gave Dave Putter the keys during the LA Auto Show. Thank goodness they’re just the beginning. Mazda says it will add an additional 500 models to the Launch Edition. That means 1,500 people are going to be very happy this season.
These first MX-5 RFs will ship early next month. Which, if you don’t have a calendar in front of you, is actually next week. Early next year the model will become more widely available as full scale production gets underway.
If you are one of the lucky dogs getting an MX-5 for the season, hopefully you live somewhere in the South so you can enjoy it. The Launch Edition offers rear-wheel drive and a retracting hard top. The fast dropping top goes up and down in just 13-seconds. The model gets its power from a 2.0-liter SkyActiv engine.
Of the original 1,000 sold out Launch Editions, two-thirds were selected with manual transmission. The rest are shipping with six-speed automatic.
The Launch Editions only come in Machine Gray. They will be the only models in the U.S. with Auburn Nappa leather upholstery and hand-painted black tops. So you purest will have to wait for the regular editions for the signature Mazda red.
The 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF starts at $32,390 for the manual Club trim. The Grand Touring (pictured below in Red) stickers for $34,660. Check out more photos of the MX-5 RF from the Los Angeles Auto Show below.
