You have to be a very special customer indeed – or willing to shell out what we are quite sure is a nifty sum – to get Audi special treatment like this.
The automaker built a one-off six-door A8 L Extended in Midnight Blue Metallic for one customer in Europe. Essentially a limo, it has a 166-inch wheelbase and it stretches 20.9-feet long, making it more than three feet longer than the standard A8 L.
Inside, each first-class seat is wrapped in Valcona leather. There is a cooler and an entertainment screen in the third row. To top things off, the whole thing gets a nearly eight foot long glass panel roof with individual sun screens.
Developing the car took almost a year. Audi says the big challenge of building the extended version was the safety and rigidity of the extra-large body. Plus, styling the thing took some tweaks.
This special A8 L is powered by a 3.0 TFSI engine good for 310 horses and 324.5 pound‑feet of torque. Audi says it can hit 0 to 62.1 mph in 7.1 second (not that speed is the goal here.) It’s mated to an eight-speed tiptronic and, of course, has Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel drive system.
We could hear about more of these hitting the road. Audi says it already has requests for from other customers.
