In case you’ve been wondering how Alaskans celebrated July 4th earlier this week, we have the answer for you. By launching cars off a cliff. Or make that a mountaintop.
Here’s video of the fine folks in Glacier View, AK catapulting cars off a cliff to celebrate America’s birthday courtesy of The Alaska Dispatch News. Glacier View is just over 100 miles northwest of Anchorage.
The town’s been catapulting cars off a mountaintop for 11 years. This year four vehicles attempted the plunge, but only three successfully went airborne. The fourth one, a Ford Van, came off the guide wire at the last moment and crashed head-on into a bulldozer. Oops.
Event organizers estimate the third car off the jump, an early-90s Nissan Pathfinder, reached 55 miles per hour on the 500 foot runway, and traveled a distance of 100 yards in the air, both records for the celebration.
