Mercedes-AMG is hoping to propel the E63 back into the limelight after being overshadowed by other models in recent years.
The company’s answer is the 2018 E63 S 4Matic+. Recently unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the redesigned model introduces several new elements to the AMG family. For one, it’s the first model to get its particular version of AMG’s 4.0-liter V8. The engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger in place of the single-scroll unit you get in the AMG GT.
With a V8 under the hood, you can bet the power doesn’t disappoint (and it is an AMG after all.) The new E63 delivers 563-horses while the top of the line E63 S bumps that up to 603. That’s almost up to the 630-hps you get in the V12 AMG S 65 Sedan models. The E63 S also boasts a mean sprint time of 0-60 in 3.3 seconds.
Another thing that makes the E63 different is that it’s the first AMG with a new nine-speed Speedshift MCT transmission. Suspension also now as air chambers at all for wheels instead of only the rear like its predecessor.
Of course, AMG’s new 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system is a big talking point, too. It adds a new Race mode in the S model. Punch it and it decouples the front axle completely. The new system also gains a fully variable torque split.
The 2018 E63 S First Edition will be the first model to launch next summer. It’s what we saw under the bright lights in LA. The First Edition has optional carbon-ceramic brakes and upgraded AMG performance seats. It comes with Mercedes’ matte paint that has a ceramic coating that makes cleaning easier. An exterior Night package trades black trim for gloss silver or chrome finishes.
