Volvo Opens Up A Lounge… Inside The XC90 Excellence

Volvo is proving that Sweden knows how to master more than just chocolate with the unveiling of a unique Lounge Console concept for it’s new 2016 XC90 Excellence at the Shanghai Auto Show. It takes the luxurious backseat to a whole new level by removing the passenger seat in order to create the ultimate lounging experience.

“We understand that most high level executives are chauffeured. This means we need to focus on the rear seats. So we did something rather radical,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President of Design. “We have created the ultimate luxury experience of Scandinavian design. Volvo has never launched a car like this before. This is the car that demonstrates what the name Volvo now means.”

The new 2016 XC90 Excellence is already set to become the Volvo flagship. The Lounge Console concept simply takes things to a whole new level for customers who have chauffeurs. By the way, China seems to be the place these days to launch chauffeur-style vehicles. Volkswagen just showed off its C Coupe GTE concept in Shanghai as well, and it too, has a lavish back seat designed for people who want to be driven around in style.

Volvo created its Lounge Console concept by integrating a complex, hi-tech, and all-inclusive entertainment, foot rest, and storage station. It consists of a rotating table that pulls away from the passenger and aligns perpendicularly to reveal a 17-inch media screen for a “full in-car theater experience” but then it rotates 90 degrees down and draws close to the passenger in a horizontal position to become a table that also opens up to reveal a lighted vanity station. There’s also space for an extra pair of shoes below the foot rest and a lock box for valuables.

“We started this work by looking at the executive lifestyle. With our progressive approach to premium design and functionality we analyzed the needs and perspective of the chauffeur driven executive, designing the car around him or her in the spirit of our brand’s aim. A key element in our thinking was how to make the available interior space work for the occupants in an optimal and luxurious fashion. Removing the passenger seat enabled us to create an open space that dramatically changes the dynamics of the interior and led to a firework of ideas and new possibilities,” Ingenlath said.

Right now, Volvo isn’t saying whether the Lounge Console concept will be an optional extra for the XC90 Excellence, but if the Chinese public reacts well to it, it could just make it to production.
