Next in line for Volvo’s Polestar treatment? The new Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine.
Just a week after announcing new Polestar optimization packages for both the new S90 and V90, Volvo is giving the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid variant a boost in performance as well.
The Polestar Performance Optimization will boost the XC90 T8’s horsepower from 400 to an impressive 421 hps. It will also add nearly 30 pound-feet of torque to the engine for a total of 501 lb-ft. The combo makes the XC90 Polestar the most powerful Volvo to date. The package will be available in the U.S. this October.
One of the main features of the new optimization is a gear-hold function for its 8-speed automatic transmission. It holds the selected gear, instead of shifting to a higher one, during cornering at high lateral g-forces. This prevents unwanted gearshifts mid-corner that can unsettle the balance of the car. Volvo claims the higher performance doesn’t impact the T8’s fuel economy or electric driving range.
Polestar is Volvo’s performance division. Volvo says the new generation of Polestar optimization focuses on improving the entire drivetrain to improve throttle response, gearshift hold, speed and precision, as well as overall engine performance.
