VW Launches Connected-Car Apple Watch App

VW Launches Connected-Car Apple Watch App

Volkswagen is taking a bite of the forbidden fruit.  Yes, VW is joining the growing group of automakers that are offering an connected-car app that will sync cars with the Apple Watch. For the record, that growing list of automakers also includes Porsche, BMW, Hyundai and Ford.

The Car-Net app for Apple Watch will allow VW customers to control a host of features and functions available through the Car-Net mobile app and Customer Web Portal directly from their wrist.  It will help drivers monitor their cars from afar, remotely lock and unlock the doors, and check to see whether the windows and sunroof are open or closed. It’ll even connect with the Apple Watch to help you find your car if you forget where it’s parked. If that isn’t enough, the app will honk the horn and flash the lights to get your attention.

“These high-tech features, available through the Car-Net® app for Apple Watch, are paving the way to Volkswagen’s future of connected vehicles. As a part of Volkswagen’s Digital Vehicle Management Platform, this was a truly collaborative effort between our Technical Development and Group IT teams,” says Abdallah Shanti, Executive Vice President and Group Chief Information Officer for Region Americas.

Gas and TDI drivers will also be able to remotely check their fuel levels. Drivers of the all-electric e-Golf will be able be able to check the current charge state, receive an estimated driving range and remotely turn charging on and off as well. They’ll also be able to remotely control the climate system for a pre-drive prep.

For parents who are hip to technology, there’s an added bonus, and that’s using the app to check up on their teen’s driving habits. Parents can set it up so they’ll receive alerts if a driver goes over the speed limit or drives into a designated no-no area.

Of course, it must be said that these features are also available with similar apps for smartphones, but VW is counting on the selling point of being able to do it all with the flip of a wrist watch with Apple’s name attached to it.

The new app will be offered in certain 2014 Beetle, CC, Eos, Jetta, Passat and Tiguan models. It will also be available on all 2015 and newer Golf, Golf GTI, Golf R, Golf SportWagen, and e-Golf models.

The Car-Net for Apple Watch will be available in the App Store for the Apple Watch.
