Volkswagen is recalling nearly 92,000 newer model vehicles to fix mechanical problems that can knock out the power-assisted brakes and increase the risk of a crash. It involves 91,800 vehicles with a 1.8T or 2.0T gasoline engine from the 2015-2016 model year.
The 2015-2016 models involved in the recall are as follows:
- Beetle Convertible
- Golf SportWagen
The automaker says on some vehicles, the rear camshaft lobe can unexpectedly shear off from the camshaft, causing loss of vacuum in the power brakes. That can lengthen stopping distance and possibly cause a crash. The engines also will go into a reduced power mode to avoid further damage.
VW discovered the problem after getting reports of camshaft failures and says there are no reports of injuries related to the issue. A fix is expected by the end of March and authorized VW dealers will repair recalled vehicles for free.
