General Motors Co. said its 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 was named Motor Trend Magazine’s 2014 Best Driver’s Car. The Z/28 is the first American car to win the award, in its seven-year history, and joins the ranks of previous winners including cars from Porsche, Audi and Ferrari.
“The transformation of the fifth-generation Camaro from ‘muscle car that handles pretty well’ to Best Driver’s Car winner is astounding,” Motor Trend editors wrote.
Motor Trend’s award contenders are selected from a pool of new or refreshed performance cars that have launched in the year before its testing. Editors run laps at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and drive the vehicles at high speeds up and down a 4.3-mile hill climb.
“The mission for the new Z/28 was to create the most capable, best-handling Camaro in our history,” Mark Reuss, GM’s executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain, said in a statement. “As such, I can’t think of a better validation of that mission than for the Z/28 to be named Motor Trend’s Best Driver’s Car.”
