2013 Infiniti JX SUV Review
Looking at the Infiniti lineup, I was not sure they needed another SUV, but after having the 2013 Infiniti JX, it now makes perfect sense. The JX fills the hole between the FX and the large QX, with a mid-sized, 7-passenger luxury SUV. This Smyrna, Georgia-produced sport-ute is finely crafted and is one of the quietest SUVs I have driven. Infiniti is using the 3.5-liter V6 as the only option for power, and they have mated it to the CVT (continuously variable) transmission.

My beautiful test vehicle is front-wheel drive, versus optional all-wheel drive, and it is completely loaded with options. This powertrain combination is rated at 265-horses, but feels like more thanks to the CVT.

This SUV is a pre-production vehicle, meaning it will never be sold and Nissan warns you that it might not be up to standards, but I found nothing wrong with it whatsoever, it is flawless, a very good sign for initial quality and ultimately long-term quality. Outside there is no doubt this is an Infiniti at a glance. You may not know it is a JX right off the bat since it is new, but you’ll know it is an Infiniti by the distinctive lines and 20” wheels that fill the entire wheel-well space. It is a head turner for sure.

For me, the real story is inside the JX, and the available options you can get, in particular the safety features. The leather interior in my test vehicle in almost stunning it is so beautiful. The color is called Wheat, but I describe it as a pale yellow or light tan, mixed with maple accents. I am not sure this light interior would be easy to keep clean, but it is certainly pleasing to the eye. Access to the third row seat is easy from the driver or passenger side.

My test vehicle has a split second row bench seat, and both sides slide forward for access to the third row, which is more fitting for children than adults. In the front and middle row seats, there is plenty of room for five adults with legroom left over. Even better, there is a large amount of cargo area with the 3rd row seat up, something you don’t find very often.

This JX has the Premium Package which gives you Navigation system, rear camera with an extra warning if it senses movement behind, like a kid or animal, a terrific Bose stereo with a subwoofer, memory driver’s seat, and push button start.

The next package is the Theater Package, which has two monitors in the front headrests for DVDs and video games, a 120V power outlet, wireless headphones, and audio/video jacks. The Touring package bumps up the stereo to a total of 15 speakers, you get 20” wheels, a panoramic moonroof, heated and air conditioned front seats, and heated 2nd row seats.

The final package on this loaded SUV is the Technology Package, which gives you lane departure warning. That is a nice feature, but in this package you get lane departure prevention too, which senses when you are veering out of your lane, and if you don’t correct it, the vehicle will steer itself back into the lane for you, but it doesn’t stop there. You get blind spot warning, and intelligent brake assist which comes with forward collision warning. Simply put, if you are closing in on the vehicle in front of you too fast, the JX will warn you. If you do not react quickly enough, it will apply the brakes for you. This is incredible technology my friends. You even get 4 years of concierge service for free.

The JX drives great, it rides great, it has a wonderful interior, tons of safety and convenience features, and for the price it is an outstanding value. Infiniti has a real winner in the vehicle and it will be a big success.

What I liked most: The interior quality and features. What I would change: Honestly, not much. I’d prefer a 7-speed automatic. MSRP: Base price $42,000, as equipped $54000. Fuel Economy: Rated at 18 City/24 Highway, and doing it. 2013 JX in a few words: A great SUV and outstanding value.

Greg, this is just a GREAT SUV. I only have praise. There are other great luxury SUVs, but this one is unique. I was super impressed.

Be sure to talk to my friend John, he owns Elk Grove Infiniti, and he's a GREAT guy. Just tell him I sent you.

THANKS for listening to the show!

Greg .

First of all, I love your show! Always a fun listen!! I have become very excited about the JX and with 3 kids and a wife who hates minivans, it looks like a great fit for our family. And your review of it did nothing but get me more excited!! But I am also a cautious consumer and it makes me nervous to zero in on one car without looking at the competition.

Is there anything out there that I should be looking at that would be a comparable to the JX? I really like the full fledged third row seating, but I am a bit concerned about the lack of space for transporting groceries and/or kiddo supplies behind that third row. I am ready to buy the JX, but I want to make there isn't something better/cheaper that I am just not seeing.

I had a question about the premium fuel. It recommends premium fuel, is this really needed and if you go with the regular what is the drop in fuel mileage expected?

Joanna, I still really love the JX, and everyone I've helped get one has loved it to. It's a terrific value. I didn't think it was sluggish at all, and I have a heavy foot. You should drive one yourself to make sure but I thought it was great!

Thanks for the kind words, if we have an Infiniti dealer in your area, they'll take good care of you.

In your video on may 2012 you felt this was best luxury mid size SUV for value at the time. Is this still your opinion?

Also, on Edmunds they list the lack of acceleration as a CON ( I think because of the CVT). Do you feel it lacks pick up at initial take off relative to other luxury mids?

I have a 2006 QX 56 that I have really loved but I'm getting the itch and frankly I don't need the space, I just like it. I was thinking of making the switch to the JX for size and certainly fuel economy. I don't think I would consider new QX due to price tag but would consider used again if the drive is superior to the JX.

Any help is appreciated and I really think you provide a valuable service through your broadcasts and I look forward to learning from your newsletter as well.

He is correct! It is Tennessee.

Mr. S.
Correction, the vehicle is built in Smyrna, Tennessee not Georgia.

Hi Jerry

We have emailed before about this car, and I finally got the second one in California two weeks ago. It is almost identical to your test car ( white exterior, wheat interior), and has more information technology than I may ever use or figure out.
It is truly the finest auto I have owned to date, and that is saying a lot.
I value your past recommendations to me about this car vs the Jeep Summit.
Keep up the outstanding show.
Thank again Lou R.
