Visibly, I have always found the Cadillac SRX to be one of the best looking SUVs on the road, at least since this current version has been for sale. For 2013, General Motors has added some styling changes to the front and rear that made the SRX even better looking.
My test vehicle is the all-wheel drive Premium Collection package. The 2013 comes in a Base package, Luxury, Performance, and Premium, with the Premium being the top of the line.
For a powertrain, the SRX still has the 3.6-liter V6 which is producing 308-horsepower, and it has a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 3.6 has been a workhorse engine for GM and has a great track record of reliability. This one has the Sport Suspension system, which give the SRX a tight feel, great cornering, but a good ride.
Also new for 2013 are upgrades to the interior, which is stunning by the way, there are some new safety features, and the SRX is noticeably quieter than previous versions.
There is no such thing as a “down the line” SRX but this Premium Collection package has virtually everything. You get navigation system, Bose surround sound, heated steering wheel, adjustable pedals, heated and air conditioned seats, heated rear seat, and remote start.
Of course leather interior is standard, so is power sunroof, climate controlled tri-zone air conditioning, power liftgate, Xenon HID adaptive headlights, and front & rear parking assist. These are the high points, there are many more options.
On the safety and security side, you get at no charge, the rear camera system, side blind zone alert, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and a host of airbags, including side curtain airbags.
I have to point out the coolest new feature to come along in a while, the Safety Alert Seat. The seat vibrates on either the left and/or right side of the driver’s seat cushion, depending on the location and nature of the impending concern, alerts the driver to a potential collision. Threats from the front and rear trigger pulses on both sides of the seats. The driver may also program the system to replace seat vibrations with beeps. The 2013 SRX is a top safety pick of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Options on my tester include a dual screen Blu Ray player ($1595), there is a charge of $995 for the Platinum Ice Tricoat paint, which is beautiful by the way. $895 gets you 20” chrome wheels, which really set off the exterior looks. Last, $2395 will buy you the Drivers Assist package.
The Drivers Assist package gets you adaptive cruise control, automatic collision preparation and automatic braking.
I love that the 2013 SRX now has CUE. “Cadillac User Experience” (CUE) is infotainment interface. The CUE system is an interactive screen with gesture controls similar to those that made Apple products so popular. If you’re a fan of simpler controls, it’s a wonderful system. Probably no interface approach is ever going to please everyone, but CUE is quite effective for many tasks. Also, adopting CUE has definitely cleaned up what previously was a complicated center stack.
Rear cargo room is good, but remember this is a 5-passenger SUV. You get almost 30- cubic feet of cargo room, and you can double that by folding the rear seat down.
Driving dynamics of the SRX are surprisingly good. It weighs 4300 pounds, which is quite heavy versus most of the competition. You get the benefit of that weight in the ride, but the sport suspension package makes it handle great. GM engineers did a super job with weight distribution to maximize all aspects of the driving experience.
What I liked most: Ride/handling, the new CUE system, and safety features.
What I would change: No spare tire, instead a tire inflation kit. REALLY?
MSRP: $57,505 as equipped.
Fuel Economy: Rated at 16 City and 23 Highway.
Warranty: 4 year/50,000 Mile bumper to bumper, 6 year/70,000 mile powertrain warranty, roadside assistance and free loaner cars.
2013 Cadillac SRX in a few words: AWESOME SUV, a true pleasure to drive.
