It all started fifty years ago when Lee Iacocca introduced the Ford Mustang at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. Since then, there have only been a total of five generations of this car. It has had its ups and downs over five decades (think Mustang II) but this 2014 GT version I am reviewing this week is a terrific mix of modern and retro.
2014 Mustang GT
Under the hood, the GT comes with the Ford 5.0-liter V8 that is producing 420-horses. Although it comes in an automatic, my tester thankfully has a 6-speed manual. Mustang has one of the most distinct sounds of any automobile made, and when you press those horses into action, the sound is music to your ears. A sound tube pipes the melodic engine sounds into the Mustang’s cabin upon heavy acceleration.
There are no visible changes to the 2014 Mustang after Ford did a big re-do in 2013. The GT interior is nice, with large, easy to read retro-style gauges that can be color changed. My review car has the $1600 Recaro leather seat option, which fits you snugly-which is nice when you are putting the ‘Stang into tight turns at higher speeds. Also inside, you get ambient lighting, the terrific Shaker audio system, Sync voice activation, and automatic headlights.
The exterior and stance of the 2014 Mustang GT looks great with its angle-forward front end and terrific 19” wheels. This car had the spoiler deleted when ordered and I really like the looks of it without one. Sequential tail lamps and HID projection headlights complete the look of one of the sharpest-looking cars on the road. This particular car has the $2495 GT Track Package which gets you unique front corner modules, Torsen helical differential with 3.73:1 axle ratio, upgraded Boss 302 radiator, high-performance Brembo friction material upgrade, upgraded front and rear brakes (with unique caliper finish) and booster, 255/40-19 Z-rated summer-only tires. Another cool option for those who might loan their Mustang to someone is MyKey. The ignition key can be programmed to drive you nuts if you do not buckle up, limit the top speed of the car, give warnings for low fuel, and you can even limit the volume of the sound system. For me, this would be a must for any Mustang driver under 18-years old.
The Mustang GT is a driver’s machine, with superb handling. The electric power steering helps with the driving dynamics of the car. I love the stiffness of the car when you go into a turn, and I also love the gearing; how the transmission lines up perfectly with the power bands of the engine. It is easy to see why Mustang sales are up significantly this year. I don’t think I would personally want this Gotta Have It Green color, and if you need a back seat for adults, this is not the car for you. If you are over 40 years old and want to re-live your youth, get a Mustang GT.

|Recently rented a 2013 Mustang from Hertz for a vacation trip to Wichita to see one of the grandkids graduate from high school. I didn't have the Boss, it was the V-6 version with dual exhaust and amazing lighting in the cabin of the car. It doesn't have too bad of a trunck either for the size of the car. I was especially impressed with the "top end" performance of that car with only a V-6 let alone with the V-8. I drove that Mustang to and back from Wichita to Phoenix, about 2300 miles and I was averaging 26.9 mpg, that's what I get with this Frontier with a four cylinder engine and they have no guts at top end, or climbing mountains like out here in Arizona.|
I currently have a 2004 Nissan Frontier that is in "cherry condition" but getting mileage on it now, about 160K plus, so I am thinking of possibly selling it and looking at two cars for possibles: the first is a Nissan Altima Coupe, the other is the Mustang V-6 model, I am not going to spend $40K, so that rules out the Boss Mustang, that's just too much money. The only thing I have against the Nissan Altima Coupe is that you can't get it with a 3.5 liter engine, that's not what I want either, I had a 2003 Altima with the V-6 and loved it. I really need to go with a V-6 this time. I am single, I am a widower, I have three grandkids that live out here and sometimes they go places with me, so I can use the Mustang for all of us, but most times it's just me or me and a friend no more though so I am really considering the Mustang, I truly enjoyed driving that one on my vacation. I was really impressed with the performace on the highway, so I'm thinking that's may be one I'd like to look at and test drive.
Do you have anything to say about that particular car, I guess the next one down from the Boss Model Mustang? Thanks for anything you might be able to suggest and what dealer in particular would be a good one to deal with in the Prescott, or Phoenix area, I'm pretty flexible on that too.
