It has been a while since I had the Chevy Tahoe, although I recommend it as a great SUV to my radio show listeners. I wanted to take one last look at the Tahoe before the new Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon come out in early 2015. Largely unchanged since 2007, the 2014 Chevy Tahoe continues the tradition of an exceptional large SUV. My tester for this week is the 4-wheel drive LTZ version, and it is very loaded.
One of the things I like most about the Tahoe is the extremely refined powertrain. Under the hood, Tahoe comes with a 5.3-liter V8 that is rated at 320-horses, and comes with a six-speed automatic. The power is smooth and determined in spite of the weight of this SUV, which is rated to tow 8500 pounds. Chevy’s Active Fuel Management system takes you down to 4 cylinders when you are out on the highway, and the transition is seamless and undetectable.
The interior of this LTZ is extremely comfortable and visibly appealing. My evaluation vehicle is crystal red, with a very light colored gray interior. I am so used to seeing either tan or black interiors in almost every car I test, this light gray is a nice departure. First and second row captain chairs provide an extremely comfortable and roomy ride for occupants, and three adults can sit across the third row seating in relative comfort too.
Cargo area is great. Room behind the third row seat is good at 16.9 cubic-feet. Remove the 50/50 split third row seats, and cargo area jumps to over 60 cubic-feet, and if you fold the 2 row seats forward cargo area leaps to 108.9 cubic-feet.
Of course, this brings up the major obstacle of all the large GM SUVs, and that is the antiquated third row seat setup. Unlike some other SUVs, the third row seats in the Tahoe have to be removed physically, which is not an easy feat especially for a lot of the ladies who drive these vehicles. They are cumbersome and weigh 50 pounds each, and have to be stored somewhere when not used. This will not be a problem once the 2015 model comes out, it has been redesigned to fold flat into the floor quickly, with the push of a button.
Standard equipment on the LTZ is extensive, and it is options that most people would want, like leather heated and cooled front seats, heated second row captain chairs that flip forward with a power button, remote start, rear camera, navigation system, tri-zone air conditioning that will freeze you out even on the hottest days, and Bluetooth connection.
Outside, you get the 20” polished aluminum wheels, running boards, power liftgate, power heated mirrors with turn signal and power curb tilt, and luggage rack.
If you are so inclined, you can get the Sun and Entertainment Package for $2435 which gets you a terrific rear seat entertainment system for DVDs and games, and a power sliding sunroof with cloth cover and live traffic updates from SiriusXM. The Tahoe I have has heavy duty trailer towing package with a built in trailer brake controller.
The Tahoe drives great, handles well, and has an incredibly short turning radius, making it easy to drive and park. Other than the third row seat issue, this is a terrific large SUV if that is what your family needs. Having this 2014 really makes me look forward to the all-new 2015.
What I liked most: Engine performance and interior.
What I would change: Of course, third row seat.

Fuel Economy: EPA rated at 15 City/21 Highway, actually doing a little better.
