When I reviewed the 2011 Jaguar XJL Supercharged, it carried a window sticker price of $113,000. Although the car itself hasn’t changed a lot since then, your choice of engines and option packages have.
The new 2015 Jag XJL that I have for review is incredible from bumper to bumper and roof to road. It starts under the hood with a 5.0-liter, 470-horse Supercharged V8. When combined with the all-aluminum body of this car, its acceleration has to be similar to that of the space shuttle, and it is effortless. Top speed is electronically controlled to 155-miles per hour.
The flagship Jaguar XJ comes with a 340-horse supercharged V6 as standard equipment. My test car has the middle engine, but for you high-rollers out there, step up to the R version which delivers 550-horses.
The XJ makes a statement at first glance and you instantly know it is a Jaguar, but not in a necessarily bold way, you just know the classic lines and grill could not be any other car. People flock to this car and have a natural curiosity.
The interior is pure Jag luxury, yet for a Jag it is very contemporary. My test car had a mineral colored interior which is sort of an off-white color that works well with the Lunar Grey exterior. It is stunning from the moment you open the door. I can’t do the dash justice trying to explain the virtual gauge cluster. It is completely animated, super high-end graphics that make you just stare at them. The shift knob rises from the center console when you activate the engine through the pushbutton start.
The Jaguar XJL comes with a 8-speed automatic transmission, dynamic stability control, smartkey push button start, Bluetooth, navigation with a 30GB hard drive that operates everything through a crystal clear 8-inch touch-screen monitor. The standard panoramic sunroof will provide sunshine for both front and rear passengers separately.
The test vehicle is the long wheelbase model, designated by the L in XJL. It comes in a shorter version, but the L will give you an additional 5” of leg room for backseat passengers. Bring your tent and camp back there if you wish. Some long wheelbase versions of cars often look odd on the outside, but it works on this car, especially with the sharp-looking 20” Kasuga wheels.
The Meridian stereo system is as good as I have ever experienced and pumps out a deafening 850-watts. From a safety standpoint, the XJ has it all…Xenon headlights, LED taillights, front and side airbags for both driver and passenger, and side curtain airbags.
Just about everything comes standard on this car including heated and cooled front and rear seats, navigation, blind spot monitoring, and rear view camera. The only option on this car is the $1700 Illumination Package, which gives you lighted door sills and illuminated air vents. Although a cool option, that’s a steep price for it.
The XJL handles very well, especially in tight curves at higher speeds. The ride is terrific for a car that handles as well as this one does. Interior quietness is amazing. It is hard for me not to draw comparisons to the Audi A8L that I personally own. There are some similarities, but I think the Audi interior is nicer, but the Jag rides and handles much sportier, and certainly wins the horsepower race.
This is one car you don’t have to choose between a true sports car and a true luxury car. The price is steep, but you get both cars in one and I can make the case that the car is a good buy for those who want to spend that kind of money.
