The sun is most definitely shining on the new 2017 Audi R8 Spyder.
The automaker unveiled the new 2017 technology-packed droptop in a can’t miss it yellow Wednesday at the New York Auto Show.
It’s a beauty of a sports car from every direction, and that makes sense since Audi says most of it is hand-built. Of course, what really sets the R8 Spyder apart from the Coupe is the cloth soft-top. It folds away underneath the rear deck-lid in a mere 20 seconds. It can also open or close while the car is going as fast as 31 mph.
It’s also powerful to the tune of 540 horses thanks to a 5.2-liter V10 engine. It produces 398 pound-feet of torque and gets a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission.
So you guessed it, the R8 Spyder is fast. It’ll rocket 0 to 62 in 3.6 seconds, the R8’s fastest sprint time ever. Top speed is just over 197 mph.
The R8 Spyder is jam packed with technology, too. 4G LTE Wi-Fi, wireless smartphone charging, Audi connect, the works. The Audi R8 Spyder is actually the first model on which selected mobile phone content can also be displayed directly in the Audi virtual cockpit via the Audi smartphone interface.
Audio fans will love the sound system. It’s a Bang & Olufsen Sound System with 13 loudspeakers, some of those in the car head restraints themselves. There are two of these in each seat, positioned at ear level of the driver and passenger.
The Spyder goes on sale later this year. We’ll have to wait for pricing, but for reference, the 2016 Audi R8 Coupe starts at around $163,000.
