Guess what gang, we’ve got some great Friday news for you.
BMW’s decided to bring the 2017 i8 Protonic Red Edition to America. This is exciting because it’s only the third color offered in the i8 lineup. The other two colors are of course Protonic Blue and White Pearl Metallic.
The Protonic Red Edition is one of several special edition i8s in the works. BMW debuted the model earlier this year at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. But at the time, it wasn’t clear whether it would sell the special edition here. But it’s on BMW’s official U.S. lineup announcement this week, which makes it official.
The 2017 BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition will begin limited production this summer. It’s being built in Germany and models will start rolling out next month to the tune of $141,695.
If you want one, you’ll need to decide fast, since orders for the special color will only be taken through the end of the year.
The i8 is BMW’s flagship hybrid supercar. Its unique design focuses on futuristic iconic with swan-wing doors, floating roof line, tucked away door handles, and distinctive aerodynamic lines. The Protonic Red Edition adds – you guessed it – Protonic Red paint accented with Frozen Grey on the rocker panels and rear fascia, along with Orbit Grey metallic W-Spoke 20-inch wheels. Inside gets matching red stitching throughout. The headrests are embossed and the door sills are engraved with the limited edition title.
As a hybrid supercar, it does 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Power comes from a combination of the TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder combustion engine and an electric motor. Combined it cranks out 357-horses with 420 pound-feet of torque. As for range, it gets a comfortable cruising range of 330-miles on a full tank and charge.
