2017 VW e-Golf Finally Arrives With More Power, Range

Earlier this year Volkswagen presented a new e-Golf with a bigger battery and a better range. Now the delayed electric hatchback is getting ready to go on sale with a starting price of $31,315.

It now offers a 125-mile range, up 50 percent from its predecessor. If you’re keeping track, that’s 25 miles less than the 2018 Nissan Leaf coming out early next year and doesn’t reach the ballpark of the Chevy Bolt’s 200+.

The e-Golf does get a nice heft of 214 lb-ft of torque. Horsepower rates 134 up from 115. It gets more power and goes faster, but remember that it’s not the Golf R. It goes from 0-60 mph in 9.6 and its top speed is only 85-mph. In other words, stick to around town and the right lane and you’ll be fine.

VW is selling it in three trims: SE, Limited Edition, and SEL Premium. All levels now come standard with a 7.2 kW charger that cuts the zero to full charge time down to six hours when, and only when, charging at a 240V station. If you want to charge up faster, the Limited Edition and SEL Premium come standard with a fast charging system. It charges up to 80 percent of the battery in under and hour. A fast charging package is optional on the SE.

Slight style upgrades include a tweaking to the front and rear bumpers, front fenders, headlights, grille, and cabin upholstery. There is more standard equipment on the SE. It now comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, LED taillights, cruise control, leather steering wheel with control buttons.

The Limited Edition replaces the upholstery with leatherette and comes with Park Distance Control. SEL Premium adds fancy tech with a $1,395 Driver Assistance package. It gives it a 12.3-inch Digital Cockpit, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning with auto brake and Pedestrian Monitoring, Lane Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Traffic Alert, Park Assist, and Light Assist.
