Fast, yes. But now Nissan’s highly-respected GT-R supercar is downright luxurious.
It’s been more than a week since I sat in Godzilla’s gorgeous brown leather cockpit prepping for a test drive around the Circuit of the Americas and I’m still thinking about the impressive interior.
The refreshed GT-R Premium is everything a sporty car should be on the outside.
While there haven’t been drastic changes over the past nine years, the GT-R’s has managed to stay at the peak of its game with tweaks along the way. For 2017, those tweaks include a larger mesh-patterned grille designed to take in more air for better cooling. There are also new vents above the titanium exhaust system tips, plus an upgraded front spoiler and bumpers. (Note: Nissan is currently working on a full redesign of the next-generation sportster.)
Under the hood, the GT-R gains 20 more horses for 2017.
It delivers an impressive 565-horsepower thanks to its handcrafted 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 under the hood mated to a dual-clutch 6-speed transmission. The GT-R delivers 476 pound-feet of torque. It’s all-wheel drive and equipped with a high-performance 1.5-way mechanical limited-slip rear differential. All that is to say, it doesn’t disappoint on the track. It has a launch control mode zero to 60 time of 2.7 seconds.
Back to that surprisingly luxurious cockpit.
Gorgeous Rakuda Tan Semi-Aniline Leather is everywhere, from the heated seats to the door panels to the steering wheel. Photos don’t do it justice, but I’ll give it a shot.
The GT-R comes with an 11-speaker Bose sound system. The cabin also has Active Noise Cancellation technology. A microphone in the ceiling identifies undesirable low-frequency engine sounds and neutralizes them with sound waves of the opposite phase. The whole goal there is a quieter driving experience.
All in all the GT-R is growing up along with many of its diehard fans and the new cabin refinements are making it more comfortable and less noisy. We’ll have to see what Nissan’s engineers come with on its upcoming complete redesign. That has to be toughie given the current model’s cult status popularity.
