2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels Cleared For Sale

The EPA has finally given the green light to Fiat Chrysler to sell 2017 Dodge Ram EcoDiesel pickups after a disagreement over emissions.  The fuel-efficient diesels started showing up at dealerships a couple of weeks ago, but remain short in supply, according to two Car Pro Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram dealers.

The EPA approved selling the 3.0-liter diesel in late July of this year, and also approved the sale of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV also equipped with the EcoDiesel engine.  Although 2017 models, Fiat Chrysler did not start producing the Jeeps or Rams until after the EPA approval.  The government agency has not yet approved the 2018 model EcoDiesels at this time, so the 2017-year model may stretch out for some time.

Production was stopped of the 3.0-diesel in late December of 2016.  In May 2017, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler alleging the company hid emission cheating software from the EPA.  Although the vehicles have been cleared, the lawsuit has not been settled.  Fiat Chrysler has adamantly denied the software was designed to cheat and has repeatedly said their case was “nothing like what Volkswagen did”. The California Air Resources Board has been involved in this case as well.

If the lawsuit is settled, FCA will issue a recall to modify the 2014-2016 model EcoDiesels to match the modifications performed on the 2017s.
