Rarely have I been bowled over by a sub-compact crossover-slash-SUV, but this is one of those times. The 2018 Nissan Kicks was indeed a nice surprise when I took it for a spin at the 2018 Texas Truck Rodeo held in the Texas Hill Country. It didn’t just impress me either. Auto journalists from the Texas Auto Writers Association named it the Compact CUV of Texas. The 2019 Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring AWD was the category’s runner-up.
2019 Nissan Kicks SR
The 2018 Nissan Kicks is new to the Nissan lineup. Our evaluated vehicle was the top of the line, loaded SR trim:
- MRSP starting at $17,990
- MSRP as equipped: $22,630
- MPG: 31 city/36 hwy/33 combined
I was quite impressed by the cabin quality, roominess, and technology the Kicks SR offers for under $23,000. Its stylish interior with orange stitching – aimed at Nissan’s “tech-hungry” target buyer – felt more expensive than its price point.
No complaints about the comfortable seats, either. Plus there were Bose speakers in the driver’s headrest. Nice! The ride and drive exceeded my expectation as well, the Kicks is peppy with an amazing turning radius.
Note, the Kicks does not offer all-wheel drive, which keeps the price down. Given that fact, we’d venture to say the main competition for the Kicks is the also exclusively rear-wheel drive, but more expensive, Toyota C-HR
Safety-wise the Kicks comes with standard Automatic Emergency Braking impressive for this price point. The Kicks SV and Kicks SR adds Blind Spot Warning (BSW) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert as well.
All in all, it is fantastic to see this offering for car buyers at this price point. Way to go Nissan!
