Well surprise, surprise. Nissan’s ProPILOT technology won’t launch in the new 2018 Leaf, but on the company’s best-seller, the Nissan Rogue. Specifically, the new 2018 Nissan Rogue SL Platinum Package. The price tag? Under $35,000.
The big announcement, made at this week’s Texas Truck Rodeo, comes after Nissan unveiled its ProPILOT tech earlier this year. The hands-on-wheel technology paves the way to the next level of autonomous driving. As I quickly learned from Kurt Rosolowsky from Nissan Product Planning, it’s easy to activate by pressing two buttons on the steering wheel.
The driver’s input always takes priority, overriding the system when the steering wheel is turned or the turn signal is operated (steering assistance goes into a temporary standby mode). The system also goes into temporary standby mode when the accelerator pedal is pressed. The system’s Intelligent Cruise Control and lane keep assistance are both cancelled when the brakes are applied.
The 2018 Rogue goes on sale October 24th. Nissan says the SUV continues to set monthly sales records, including a 47 percent increase in September. Calendar year 2017 sales-to-date of nearly 300,000 units represents a 22.9 percent increase over the previous year.
The next Nissan to feature ProPILOT will be the redesigned Nissan Leaf due out in January.
