Last year the Volkswagen brand outsold Toyota. Meaning it took the crown as the top-selling global automaker. Now it takes that same go anywhere invincible spirit with its new 2018 Volkswagen Atlas Weekend Edition.
The special edition is basically VW’s take on the classic “weekender” Eurovan pop-up campers. It comes with a bunch of accessories including a pop-up “Urban Loader” roof cargo box.
It fits about 12 carry-on bags. It also has carrier roof rails, with the box, and sidesteps. Along with this are the heavy-duty truck liner, window and hood deflectors, and seatback coverage.
Inside, it’s all about technology. The second-row comes standard with universal tablet holders. So no need for the kids to have to look out the window during the drive. Other comfy passengers include your pets. The edition adds on a cargo divider behind the second row to keep pets separate, but close.
Rounding off the Weekend goodies are all-weather rubber floor mats, cargo cover, splash guards, and wheel locks. The exterior gets custom 18-inch Prisma wheels in anthracite gray.
The Weekend Edition is based on the SEL Premium trim. It carries a 3.6-liter VR6 with 276-horsepower. This connects to a standard eight-speed transmission and 4Motion all-wheel-drive.
If you’re wondering why you haven’t seen the Atlas on the road, it’s because it’s not on sale yet. It will hit the road sometime this Spring. More pricing and details will be available then.
We have to say it’s a bold move to create a special edition before the standard model has even gone on sale. This move shows the confidence VW has in the Atlas Especially in how well it hopes it will sell in the U.S. And with VW and crossover sales up, they might just be on to something here.
In the meantime, you can check it out at the Chicago Auto Show starting February 11.
