Good news for those of you waiting to see if Volkswagen’s all new full-size SUV 2018 Atlas makes the safety cut; it does. At least where crash tests and collision avoidance are concerned.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives it honors as a Top Safety Pick. The Atlas scores ‘Good’ in all five of the IIHS’s crash test scenarios.
It also passes the front crash prevention test with a ‘Superior’ rating. This test examines the optional front crash prevention technology. The system effectively drops the 17 mph off the high 25 mph collision test. On the lower 12-mph collision test it completely avoids crashing.
With the IIHS’s big push for better headlights, the Atlas fails to make the creme-de-la-creme Top Safety Pick+, because its headlights score ‘Marginal’ on the upper trims and ‘Poor’ on the lower ones. It’s a category that’s proving problematic for more than one automaker.
