2019 Mercedes AMG E63 S Review

This week, we take a look at the beautiful and incredibly fast 2019 Mercedes Benz AMG E63 S Sedan, the most powerful sedan in the Mercedes lineup.

If you are not aware, AMG is the performance division of Mercedes, and has a long history of taking great cars and turning them into great-performing luxury cars. They have been doing it since 1967.


Let’s talk about what’s under the hood, because it is what makes this sedan different. It has a hand-built 4.0-liter V8 Bi-turbo engine that is putting out an incredible 603-horses. It also puts out 627-pound feet of torque.

The big engine is mated to a 9-speed shiftable automatic transmission, and all E63 S models have the Benz 4Matic system, which means it is all-wheel drive.


This speedster is attractive on the outside with a low, wide, and aggressive stance. There is a heavily-vented grill with front splitter, and also a rear spoiler that adds to the sleek looks. There is carbon fiber quad exhaust and this car has 20” AMG 5-spoke wheels, and red brake calipers. Just a side note, all the collision avoidance sensors for the car are behind the big star in the grill.


When you open the large door of the E63 S, you see a crafted interior that exudes pure luxury. The brown interior draws you in as you sit in the ultra-comfortable, very bolstered power seats. Offset stitching and carbon fiber runs from door to door and across the dash.

The digital gauges are easy to read and there are three different choices to make the first of the two 12.3” screens look different. Between the 200-mile per hour speedometer and tachometer is a driver info center that operates from the AMG flat-bottomed, heated steering wheel.

There are a number of buttons on the carbon fiber center console, including the Dynamic ride control switch that takes you from Individual, to Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. If that’s not enough, there is RACE MODE, my new favorite. It is hard to describe the drastic differences between these modes, especially in the steering, sound, and transmission shifts.

Also on the center console you can turn off or on the amazing performance exhaust, turn OFF the auto start/stop system, and lock out the transmission from shifting itself, forcing you to use the shift paddles.

There is a large round knob on the console that controls the Comand system, which runs everything on the 12.3” screen to the right. Over the knob is a touchpad that works in conjunction with the knob to operate through all the systems, like sound system, navigation, Bluetooth, apps, Surround view camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and controls the car’s settings. There is a bit of a learning curve, but once you get it down, it becomes fine. Behind a door on the console is a wireless cell phone charger.

The Burmeister sound system is spectacular, and the speakers in the door are a work of art. Two small speakers just above the door panels light up and change colors.


The E63 has good headroom for all passengers. The back seat is roomy and will easily hold three adults. Cargo area in the trunk is quite large, too.

Standard Features and Options

My E63 review car comes loaded with popular standard features like keyless entry, heated and cooled front seats, power trunk, blind spot monitoring, and LED headlamps and tail lights.

Options total $17,600, the most notable are the $4500 sound system, the exhaust is $1250, the Driver Assistance package is $2250 and includes an impressive list of safety features.

It also has a panoramic sunroof, acoustic comfort package to make the car quieter inside, cabin air purification and fragrance system, and massaging seats.

Ride and Drive

I want to stress the E63 S has amazing acceleration, an incredible exhaust system, handling and cornering is superb, and the steering is great depending on the drive mode. It is a real driver’s machine and will fit whatever mood you are in.

Fuel economy is rated at 15 city and 23 highway, and maybe someone with a lighter foot can make that, but I cannot.


All this greatness comes with a hefty price tag. Total MSRP is $124,950, but keep in mind this is an engineering marvel that can be your comfy luxury sedan or it can be your track ready race car.
