If you’re a Ford Mustang, Steve McQueen and Bullitt movie fan, Ford has a little something you might like. Or make that a lot of something. It’s the newly unveiled dare we say it heart-stopping 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt.
Named after the 1968 movie of the same name, the new Bullitt is being unveiled in honor of the film’s 50th anniversary. It commemorates the epic car chase scene through the streets of San Francisco, with Steve McQueen at the helm of a ’68 Mustang fastback. That car had a 325-horsepower 390 V8 and 4-speed manual. The new 2019 version comes with the GT’s 5.0-liter V8 that packs at least 475 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. Top speed is 163 mph, 8 miles over even the current Mustang GT.
The 2019 version comes with the Mustang GT Premium and Performance Packages. It’s equipped with a manual transmission and a white cue ball shift knob on the gear shifter as a nod to the original. It comes in two colors. The available classic Dark Highland Green exterior paint, as well as Shawdon Black. Chrome accents subtly surround the grille and front mirrors.
There’s not much in the way of badging because that’s the way Ford planned it. Opting for cool Bullitt understatement, Ford only gave the circular faux gas cap a Bullitt logo on the exterior.
Inside, you’ll find a 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster. A unique Bullitt welcome screen that starts in green with an image of the car rather than the pony. Aside from the two exterior paint choices we mentioned, Mustang Bullitt buyers are limited to three factory-installed options:
- Bullitt Electronics Package includes navigation, driver memory seats and mirrors, upgraded sound system and Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert that can alert customers of vehicles detected in difficult-to-see places
- MagneRide semi-active suspension system optimizes driving performance
- RECARO black leather-trimmed seats
The limited edition Mustang will roll out this summer. No numbers yet on just how limited and we’ll still have to wait for pricing info, too. This is actually the third Bullitt-branded special edition. Ford also released Bullitt models in 2001 and 2008.
Original Bullitt Found
There’s another cool part of the story, too. The original Bullitt recently turned up after vanishing for decades. Check out the full story from HLN’s MichaeLA show below, which includes an interview with Steve McQueen’s granddaughter.
One of the most sought after cars in movie history – found! Steve McQueen's granddaughter sees the Mustang #Bullitt for the first time 50 years later. I spoke with the car's owner and Molly McQueen as #Ford debuts 2019 model. Watch "MichaeLA" weekdays at 3pm ET on HLN.
