Volvo’s new 2019 XC40 is a hit with auto journalists from the Texas Auto Writers Association. Members from the organization recently named it the 2018 Compact Luxury SUV of Texas at the group’s annual Texas Truck Rodeo. The 2019 Acura RDX was the category’s runner-up.
Journalists evaluated the category on five criteria: Interior, Exterior, Performance, Value, and Personal Appeal.
2019 Volvo XC40 Vs 2019 Acura RDX
From our point of view, the XC40 and RDX are both stylish SUVs with a competitive price point. The XC40 is aimed at younger drivers looking for a fun to drive entry-level luxury SUV full of technology that’s priced right, while the redesigned Acura RDX more likely appeals to price-conscious luxury buyers who are looking for a little more refinement and more cargo space at a great value without sacrificing style.
Both vehicles feature a lot of standard safety driver assist technology. Their cabin interiors and infotainment systems vary greatly, however.
2019 Volvo XC40 R-Design
The XC40 R-Design we evaluated at the Texas Truck Rodeo makes a strong style statement with orange pops of color in the cabin. Expect premium materials, loads of technology and clever small-item storage solutions.
- MSRP starting at $33,200
- MSRP as Equipped: $45,985
- MGP: 25 city/26 hwy/29 combined

The XC40 also won Best Connectivity for its Sensus infotainment system. Volvo says its processor gets a speed boost for 2019 for faster response.
The Car Pro’s Terry Box recently spent a week with the XC40 R-Design and you can check out his review here.
2019 Acura RDX Advance AWD
The mid-sized 2019 Acura RDX Advance is a head turner. We’re fans of the RDX’s striking, much-needed redesign and futuristic, premium quality cabin which brought some passion back into the brand.
- MSRP starting at $37,300
- MSRP as Equipped: $47,800
- MGP: 21 city/27 hwy/23 combined

RDX highlights include Acura’s Torque Vectoring AWD, its new True Touchpad Interface with a 10.2-inch touchscreen and a hands-free tailgate. I also have to mention the exceptional Acura/ELS Studio 3D Premium Audio System. Honda’s well-known reliability factor is also a bonus for the RDX.
