6 Things To Know About The 2017 Subaru Impreza

The Impreza certainly isn’t the first car that comes to mind when someone drops the Subaru name. Generally, the Forester and the Outback take that prize. However, for 2017 the model gets a complete makeover.

Last year the sales of the entry-level model were ho-hum to put it mildly. Subaru sold 120,000 new Imprezas in 2016. Let’s put that in perspective. The Civic and Corolla sold more than three times that amount. Each. It’s not that it’s a bad car. On the contrary, it’s a Subaru and carries all the benefits of the brand. It just tends to get overlooked.

Here’s what you need to know about the all-new 2017 model.

1. It’s built on Subaru’s new global platform in America.

The new Impreza is the first to be built on Subaru’s all-new Global Platform. Subaru says it’s stiffer and designed to deliver higher levels of driving pleasure, agility, crash protection and ride comfort. It’s steering ratios and suspension also get a reworking for a more stable and responsive ride. The platform is just the beginning. Only 5 percent of the last generation’s parts remain in the new 5th gen. Yep. That means it’s 95 percent new.

Available as both a sedan and a 5-door, it’s available in four trims: Base, Premium, Sport and Limited. It’s also the first Impreza to be built in America, not Japan. It’s rolling off the line of Subaru’s plant in Indiana.

2. Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive is standard.

It wouldn’t be a Subaru without the automaker’s popular Symmetrical All-Wheel drive. It comes standard on any trim. There is also a new 4-way Tire Pressure Monitoring System that can detect pressure drops at individual wheels. It comes standard on the Sport trim and is available on the other models.

3. It’s loaded with safety features.

Along with its all-wheel drive, Subaru is noted for its safety thanks to its available Eyesight advanced driver-assist technology.  It includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Pre-Collision Braking and Lane Departure and Sway Warning, plus a Lane Keep Assist function. Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are also available.

Eyesight helps the Impreza earn a superior rating in front crash prevention from The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Subaru touts its safety features as best-in-class in a new ad pitting the Impreza against the Corolla, Civic, and Focus.

4. It carries the Kelley Blue Book award for Best Resale Value.

This seems to be part of what Subaru hints at in its new ad Moving Out. In it, Subaru labels the model the “longest lasting car in its class”, citing that 97 percent of Impreza’s sold in the last 10 years are still on the road.

5. It’s roomier inside, with better materials.

The exterior lines are still that of a standard, not stand out, compact sedan and hatchback. They do get a slimmer, sharper, and sportier feel though than the last gens. So that’s good.

Inside gets roomier and uses better material. Especially on the dash which gets more soft material instead of the last generations heavy use of plastic.  It features Subaru’s STARLINK multimedia system, touchscreen size varies depending on the trim. The Limited trim also comes with the Impreza’s first-ever 6-way power driver’s seat.

6. Fuel Economy is on par with its class.

The 2.0-liter cylinder boxer engine is new. But gets a still not-that-exciting 152-horses with 148 pound-feet of torque. Check out the WRX if you’re looking for power.

The Impreza comes with a 32 mpg combined fuel economy rating. That’s close to what other models in its class get, including the Civic, Corolla, and Focus.

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is on sale now starting from just over $19,000.
