Last week a 9-year-old boy in Houston, Texas, saved himself and several other kids from a car-jacking criminal by calling 911.
Alex Veasley, 9, was on his way home in an after-school shuttle with five other children, News 4 reported. The driver left the car full of sleeping children unlocked and running while she picked up some fast food for the kids. Alleged car thief Brenton Simmons seized the opportunity and jumped into the vehicle. The fact that the SUV was full of kids did not dissuade the crook.
“He said, ‘Hang on,’ and I was like, ‘Wait, you’re in the wrong car,’ and he was like, ‘I know, I’m stealing this car,'” Alex told KPRC-TV.
Simmons drove the children around for hours while drinking beer in the front seat. When Simmons finally stopped for gas, Alex saw an opportunity. Grabbing a cellphone left behind in the car, he called 911.
Police quickly surrounded the vehicle. Simmons was arrested and charged with five counts of kidnapping.
