BMW Hangs On As Luxury Auto Sales Leader

BMW Sedan

Sales of U.S. luxury cars fell 11% in 2020 versus 2019, as compared to the overall market fall of 14%. Luxury brands delivered over two million vehicles in 2020 and accounted for almost 14% of the total sales.

BMW was the top-selling luxury brand in 2020, marking a streak of two straight years in the top position. Although down versus 2019, BMW delivered 278,732 vehicles in America.

Nipping on the heels of BMW all year, Lexus finished 2020 with a total of 275,041 vehicles. Lexus edged out Mercedes-Benz by a mere 125 vehicles for the entire year. Mercedes ended up putting 274,916 vehicles in people’s driveways in 2020, a decrease of 13% from 2019.

Porsche was only down 6.9% from 2019 and delivered 57,294 vehicles in the U.S. for 2020.

It is always a horse race between BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz for sales supremacy, but this is as close as I can remember the totals being.
