Volvo, already well-known for its safety and driver’s assistance features, can now add a distinction to its lineup. The automaker says every vehicle in its lineup has earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. The latest awardee is Volvo’s newest vehicle, the all-electric 2021 XC40 Recharge. Volvo also says it’s the first fully electric small SUV to earn the IIHSA’s highest safety award.

To be awarded the top IIHS’ top honor, the XC40:

  • Earned “Good” ratings in all six crash tests.
  • Offers “Good” or “acceptable” curve-adaptive LED headlights across all trims.
  • Is equipped with a standard front crash prevention system with “Superior” and “advanced” scores in the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations, respectively.

A new suite of safety sensors also debuts in the Volvo XC40 Recharge.

Following the latest honor, Volvo says it has the most single year TSP+ awards earned by any brand since IIHS started handing out the award in 2013. Volvo Cars received nine TSP+ awards in February, five in March and now one in April, totaling 15 awards for 2021.

“Regardless of body style, engine or trim, every Volvo offers innovative protection in a crash.” said Anders Gustafsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car USA. “We are proud that IIHS has recognized this by awarding a Top Safety Pick Plus to every vehicle we produce today. No other company has been awarded this honor across all carlines in 2021.”
