First Look: 2017 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid

Acura is combining the SUV trend with the call for more earth-conscious models. In April, the brand will roll out its first-ever hybrid SUV: the 2017 MDX Sport Hybrid. Notice the ‘Sport’ in the name. A far cry from the sluggish hybrids of old, this model actually takes the cake for the most powerful Acura SUV in the brand’s history.
More good news? It’s only $1,500 more than a similarly outfitted gasoline MDX.

Under the Hood

One of the big stories here is the power under the hood. The hybrid MDX is actually more powerful than the standard gas model. It carries a 3.0-liter engine V6 with three hybrid motors. The powertrain delivers 321-horsepower with 289 pound-feet of torque. That’s 31-horses more than the regular model.
An advanced 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is standard, something the MDX has in common with the RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD sedan. There are also paddle shifters on the steering wheel. You can check out all the tech specs here.

Fuel Economy

When it comes to fuel economy, you’re going to see the biggest difference in city driving.
The hybrid model gets 26 city and 27 highway mpg. Those numbers are up 8 and 1 mile over the standard gasoline version. So the hybrid option will save you the most money if you’re doing mostly city and around town driving.
Commuting will still cost you about the same in gas.

Pricing and Equipment

The hybrid model starts from around $52,000. That’s only $1,500 more than a similarly equipped gas model. But keep in mind, it’s about $7,000 more than the base MDX model.
All MDX Hybrid models will come standard with the Technology Package and AWD. In other words, you can’t get a stripped down version of the hybrid version.
On the other hand, the Tech Package is a $4,410 add-on if you’re going with the standard gas model. Then tack on another $2,000 for all-wheel drive. That boosts the price up to $51,435, which is where you get the ‘only’ $1,500 price difference. This fits with Jerry’s recent warning about artificially low starting prices.
The Tech package adds on great features. These include 20-inch Aluminum-Alloy Wheels, rain-sensing wipers, remote engine start, rear door smart key entry, and Navigation. It also adds the safety features blind spot and rear cross traffic monitoring.
The Hybrid also offers an Advance Package starting from $58,975. If you do decide to go for it, you’ll get leather heated and cooled sport seats, heated steering wheel, parking sensors, heated second-row seats, fog lights, and rear door shades.

2017 Acura MDX Video Review

We loved the gas MDX we recently took for a spin. Our 2017 test model came loaded with all the packages, including the Entertainment package. All together they add $12,500 to the base standard price. You can check out Jerry’s review below.
