Summary

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is expanding a recall involving 2011-2013 Sonata and 2011-2012 Sonata Hybrid sedans that may have faulty airbags that dont deploy. The recall, impacting nearly half a million vehicles, follows a new government investigation into six crashes in 2011 Hyundai Sonata and 2012-2013 Kia Forte sedans that have resulted in four deaths and six injuries.

The issue is likely with the air bag control unit (ACU) that may short circuit. If that happens it could prevent the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags from deploying.

  • On February 27, 2018, Hyundai Motor Company notified NHTSA that it was recalling 154,753 model year- 2011 Sonata vehicles.
