NHTSA Investigates Smart ForTwo Engine Fires

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into eight complaints of Smart ForTwo engine fires. The investigation involves 2008-2009 models, but according to NHTSA documents, the fires occurred in 2015 and 2016.

Six owners report smoke, an unusual noise, and a check engine light before pulling over and seeing a fire in the engine compartment. The other two instances occurred when the 2-door cars were stopped. All owners say flames quickly engulfed their cars. Mercedes-Benz, who builds Smart cars, says itís not aware of any injuries.

The preliminary evaluation could lead the way to a formal recall down the road once the NHTSA determines the cause, scope and frequency of the alleged defect.

Customers with concerns should call Mercedes-Benz at (800) 367-6372.
