2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition Prototype.
As if the Toyota 4Runner
didn’t have it going on in the off-road department already, as one of the most capable body-on-frame truck-based SUVs out there, Toyota is now taking it a step further with the new Venture Edition. We had our first look at a prototype on display at this year’s State Fair of Texas
. It’s based on the TRD Off-Road Premium and add things like a Yakima Megawarrior rack on top along with making some other appearance changes to differentiate it from the lineup.
The 2020 4Runner Venture Edition features a standard 52-inch long steel Yakima Megawarrior
Rack and Roof Crossbars with a deep spacious tray designed to carry things. Toyota and 4Runner logos are black, while additional black accents will include the outer mirrors, door handles and rear spoiler. Although based on the TRD Off-Road Premium, Venture Edition ditches the TRD Off-Road badging from the C-pillar for what Toyota calls a “cool, minimalist” look. It all rides on gunmetal-colored 17-inch TRD wheels
Inside, standard all-weather floor mats will help keep the interior from getting too dirty during your adventures. A rear cargo mat will also come standard, and there is also an available rear sliding cargo deck. You’ll also find SofTex-trimmed powered and heated front seats with “TRD” lettering on the headrests. The second-row gets SofTex-trimmed seats, too. Venture Edition will come standard Smart Key with Push Button Start.
The 4Runner’s body-on-frame construction features a four-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension. Like the TRD Off-Road Premium it’s based on, the Venture Edition is equipped with a part-time 4WD system that features a 2-speed transfer case with selectable low range. A selectable rear locker comes standard to provide added traction when needed in low range. Toyota’s standard CRAWL control provides additional low-range off-road functionality by regulating engine speed and braking force to slowly move the vehicle in forward or reverse at one of five driver-selectable low-speed settings. When engaged, CRAWL allows the driver to focus on steering in challenging terrain without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedal. Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) can help maintain traction by distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground when it senses wheel slippage. Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) is another traction tool that helps improves grip by controlling wheel spin based on the terrain setting (like dirt, sand or rock) selected by the driver.
New for 2020 Toyota 4Runner Lineup
The entire 2020 4Runner lineup receives some noteworthy updates including Toyota’s active safety system TSS-P on all grades and updated infotainment that includes a larger 8-inch touchscreen, Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Along with those key updates (and a few others). There is also a new 4.2-inch driver info display.
For 2020, the 4Runner makes Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) standard on all grades. This advanced active safety system includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning System, Automatic High Beams and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).
No word yet on when the Venture Edition will arrive, but you can order one now. Pricing is still TBD.
